ACADEMIC PROGRAMS WE OFFER

Beyond the Horizon

As part of the Coastal Outreach Soccer, coaches stress the need for academic excellence. The literacy levels in our community are among those lowest in Georgia. Realizing the need to support youth literacy students are provided a grade level appropriate book and students may also check out books from their school library. Comprehension of reading material is fundamental, and coaches stress the need to students to assimilate information just as much they are learning out on the field. Beyond the Horizon literacy program participants will read 24 Accelerated Reader (AR) books per year and complete AR assessments administrated by the Glynn County School system. COS middle to high school girls program launched its book club Spring 2019 in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. They meet each week for discussion and reflection writing. COS is launching the middle to high school boys book club this fall 2019. Each participant who maintains a B average and attends 80% of book club sessions will be recognized as an Academic All-American during COS annual awards night held in June.

Big Play Center of Excellence

The center has 20 Chromebooks that are available for students to use for test preparation, review of course work, completion of homework, and gives this group of students’ accesses to technology. The center has become a safe environment for students to improve the literacy skills, receive academic support services, explore careers, college preparation and develop leadership skills.
